Having moved to Edinburgh from London, I've seen a real benefit from having segregated cycle lanes and traffic light filters. I think if there was a least one east-west and north-south segregated cycle way they could easily be designed to have existing quite routes and railway paths to feed into them.
Why the contribution is important
Segregated cycle lanes make people of all levels of cycling feel much safer and encourages new cyclists. There are often times in Edinburgh when I don't feel safe with only a painted line keeping me separate from heavy traffic. I think if there were to be such provision people would be more inclined to leave their cars at home.
